PERFECTIONISM vs. PURSUIT OF EXCELLENCE
Many see perfectionism as a good trait, but the truth is it can backfire!
Perfectionism often makes a person less effective. Yet it is a common problem. According to USA Today about one person in three is a perfectionist.
Effects on perfectionism:
Effects of perfectionism include procrastination and problem-failed relationships. Trade-offs are made in the never-ending search for perfection. They include not knowing when to quit, not allowing room for mistakes and thus denying the opportunity for growth; focusing on mistakes or flaws and not taking into account what's been done well; and not being able to distinguish between perfectionism and the healthy pursuit of excellence.
Difference between dreams and perfectionism:
According to psychologist Debra White, perfectionists deny themselves the feeling of satisfaction. "It's like following the North Star and being upset because you never get there. There is a difference between having dreams and goals, and being a perfectionist. Perfectionists also have a hard time completing projects, making decisions and admitting errors. They waste time by covering up an error or documenting why they made a mistake rather than acknowledging and correcting it. Decisions are difficult because each one, no matter how minor, must be perfect.
Correcting a tendency:
If you feel you may be falling into the perfectionist trap know that it's a tendency that can be corrected. Make an effort to ease up on yourself. It really will help you manage your work and your time more effectively.
